When asking “How are you doing today?”, amidst a social crisis, let it not be a pleasantry that invites a socially accepted response.
Let it not be a greeting.
Let it not have anyone fulfil our expectation to say “I’m fine”.
Let it not be a conversation starter but an honest inquiry.
Let it give people the permission to say they’re not fine, if need be.
One of the kindest gestures we can extend to ourselves and others, in a time like this, is to make clear that we don’t have to pretend to be fine.
