From Being to Beeing

“You’ve heard the old law of physics that a bumble bee can’t fly. Every aerodynamic principle says that its wing span is too short to support its massive body in flight…But a bumble bee doesn’t know that. It never took physics. It just flies around all over the place and that’s what you have to do.” – NASA article

Apparently, these words adorn the bumblebee poster at the NASA Science Center.

I don’t know about bumble bees. But I’ve learnt a thing or two from my garden bees.

Someone aptly coined the phrase “As busy as a bee”. Spot a hive and you’d think every bustling bee is out to fulfil its inner calling of completing an important mission, right? Wrong.

To Think like a Bee 🐝 is an idea I first heard in a TED talk.

A bee lives for about 4-8 weeks and makes about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey, in its lifetime. So one bee down and that’s what we lose – 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey. May not seem much. But try telling that to a busy bee. The last time I tried to get in its way, I didn’t escape unhurt.

To a bee, its work means the world. Its focused on what it can do and what it should do, in its given role in the system. Taking it one day at a time, it looks to play its part well, to add value and be done at that.

Ubellah Maria’s amazing post is about the Unfinished. Why we leave thoughts unsaid, things undone, mysteries unraveled and feats unaccomplished. Are we weighing our contributions, far more than it deserves? Are we taking ourselves far too seriously and downplaying our little contributions in the larger game. If we care to shrink our Selves and begin to think like a bee – do we stand a chance at making a difference?

Sure it maybe small and insignificant in the whole. But doesn’t every 1/12th count? At home, at work, in the community. Think about it-

  • Your 1/12th to sustainable cities and communities
  • Your 1/12th to reduced inequalities
  • Your 1/12th to equity and inclusion
  • Your 1/12th to an affordable and clean world
  • Your 1/12th to climate action

Life is not a problem to be solved. Just remember to have something that keeps you busy doing what you love while being surrounded by the people who love you
